Wedding coverage has long centered on “the moment”: finding the dress. But what’s rarely talked about, and often misunderstood, is the alteration process that ultimately determines how a bride feels, moves, and remembers her wedding day.

Goli Parvinian Young is the founder and designer of Chicago-based bridal label Goli June, a full-time fashion professor, and an expert source on this overlooked side of bridal fashion. Her background spans both independent and established bridal fashion, giving her a rare perspective at the intersection of design, education, and the technical realities of bridalwear — particularly fit, comfort, and craftsmanship.
“The experience of finding your wedding dress has become almost a cultural touchpoint… most likely because of pop culture like Say Yes to the Dress,” Goli explains. The shopping phase is highly eventized — guests, champagne, extended appointments — while alterations remain “a technical, sensitive process” that’s rarely part of the public narrative.

That gap often leads to confusion once brides enter fittings. Even ordering the same size as the sample doesn’t guarantee the same fit. “The sample gown has been tried on by many different body types, has been clipped and pinned a million times, and has most likely stretched over time,” Goli notes. “The gown that comes in brand new for you will fit differently.”
She also addresses why alteration costs are so frequently misunderstood. “This perception is unfortunately due to the world of fast fashion that we live in,” she says. Bridal tailoring is a highly specialized craft, and in cities like Chicago, brides can realistically expect to spend between $800 and $2,500, with work beginning three to four months before the wedding and requiring multiple fittings.
“If the bride feels uncomfortable, it will be noticeable — in person and in her photographs,” she says. “The bride wears the dress, not the other way around.”
Goli emphasizes that fit matters more than trends
